Manchester United have rekindled their interest in Paris St Germain’s Lucas Moura according to various reports including The Independent.
The 21-year-old’s name brings up bad memories for United fans after what happened two summers ago. We were on the verge of signing him before PSG came in with a €45 million bid and poached him from us. It was a bid that sparked a furious reaction from Sir Alex Ferguson who said that football had gone mad if teams were paying that amount for a 19-year-old.
Moura claimed that Leonardo’s presence was the big draw for him which is why he snubbed a move to Old Trafford but I’m sure the money sweetened the deal. However, things haven’t been all plain sailing for Moura in France as when he wasn’t in the side, he was dropped from the Brazil squad and was unsettled at the club.
This week, David Moyes went to Paris and watched Moura’s PSG win 3-1 over Bordeaux, a game in which Moura grabbed an assist and was named man of the match which has led to us being linked with a move for him again.
Just like he would have been two summers ago, Moura would be an outstanding signing for United right now. One of the next generation for Brazil, Moura is a direct and talented winger who could add so much to the side. If reports about Nani leaving are true, then Moura would be a brilliant like for like replacement.
Moyes may have to accept that in the next two transfer windows, United could be forced to spend silly money in order to sign the targets we want. Teams know we are desperate to bring players in and could use it to their advantage, PSG certainly would if we went in for Moura given that they paid €45 million.
On paper, Moura would be a deam marquee signing so clearly it is too good to be true. However, the money is there and if it is backed by the intention, there aren’t many players in the market who United couldn’t afford this summer.
