Sir Alex Ferguson has made contact with Paris St Germain manager Laurent Blanc to discuss Edison Cavani’s situation, according to the Daily Mail.
On the surface, Ferguson getting more involved with the club in terms of transfers looks like David Moyes being undermined but there are a few points to note about this if it is true.
Most importantly, Ferguson and Moyes are in regular contact. If Ferguson has indeed called ex-Red Blanc, it would have been with the blessing of Moyes. At a time where Moyes in the middle of a pressure boiler, what harm is it for Ferguson to step in and help ease the transition behind the scenes by getting involved with transfers?
At Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane is heavily involved in luring players to the Santiago Bernabeu. He was responsible for Raphael Varane choosing a move to Spain and during the summer, he was very vocal about Gareth Bale. If Ferguson can adopt a similar role at United, it would only help Moyes. After all, Ferguson is a director at the club and it is his job now to help Moyes however he can.
If Cavani is who Ferguson has called about, it points towards a potential exit in the summer of a striker from Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney‘s future will dominate the summer headlines again but Robin van Persie’s future at Old Trafford isnt guaranteed either. There is no guarantee that Javier Hernandez will want to remain at the club either given how little playing time he has.
Ferguson’s call to Blanc should not be seen in a negative light. If Ferguson has called up old players to enquire about the availability of someone, he is only helping Moyes whatever which way he can.
Whilst he is on the phone to Blanc, Ferguson should have a quick word about midfield duo Blaise Matuidi and Marco Verratti.
