Manchester United might make another midfield signing as well as Mata

by Sam Peoples

Both the Manchester Evening News and The Telegraph have suggested that David Moyes is looking to sign more than just Juan Mata in the January transfer window.

United are expected to complete the signing of Mata in the next 24 hours but with a need for at least one central midfielder and a left-back, this window could end up being far busier than anyone imagined. Michael Carrick has now been ruled out for a reported three weeks following his innocuous injury against Sunderland and that could be even more motivation for Moyes to land a central midfielder this winter.

The Telegraph’s Jason Burt was the journalist who first broke the story of Mata to United and was also the first to go public with the news that we had agreed a deal with Chelsea for £37 million, so he has certainly earned his credibility when it comes to United transfers in January.

As for the targets, there are a host of players that have been linked to United including Arturo Vidal, Fredy Guarin, Ilkay Gundogan, Paul Pogba and Miralem Pjanic but sources close to the club have reported that Kagawa could be involved in a swap deal plus cash for Gundogan.

In his United Review notes for the game, Moyes was typically coy in getting hopes up about transfers. However, with United on the edge of breaking the club transfer record, optimism has understandbly returned in regards to new faces coming in.

“I fully understand that supporters are keen to see us freshen up the squad with new faces, but January is a difficult month in which to bring people in,” he said.

“While we are actively scouting players all the time, a lot of the work we are doing now is preparation for the summer.

“If we can do any business now then we will certainly try to do it, but I will not compromise the standards required for a player that can come into this club and help improve it.”

“We all know that our club is undergoing changes at present.

“But I have a clear path in my mind and I know where we are going.”

Only a few days ago, the thought of signing Mata was laughable but it is on the verge of being completed and although it is almost fantastical to think that United may actually be able to land a top class central midfielder in January, there are plenty of reliable journalists who think it could well happen.
