Juan Mata hasn’t even been a Manchester United player for a week yet he is already talking like he has played at Old Trafford for years.
When asked what he likes most about United, he singled out our never give up mentality and willingness to fight until the very end as something which really attracted him about the club.
That fighting spirit is the ethos of the club and always will be. Mata seems to get that straight away.
“What I like the most about this club is the character,” he said.
“It would be very difficult for us to come back and take the first position but this is the club that could do that. They fight to the end and that’s the image I have of them. They always try to win titles; they fight until the end and come back from difficult moments.
“I want to show the football I have inside me. That’s what I want to do. I think the team is good, the squad is good. This season they’ve had some unlucky moments. I hope from now until the end of the season we win as many games as we can.”
In his first press conference, he was as classy as you’d expect from a player who finds the time to study for a double degree whilst being a Premier League footballer and you could see David Moyes beaming next to him the whole time. His arrival has breathed new life into United’s season.
There may have been an audible buzz around United when Robin van Persie signed but Mata’s arrival has more than matched that and nobody can wait to see the Spaniard take to the field in a United shirt, hopefully against Cardiff tomorrow.
