Juan Mata‘s move to Manchester United has left fans a bit speechless given the magnitude of what his arrival could mean for the club.
The 25-year-old made the move from Chelsea for a record £37.1 million and there is a real buzz about hopefully seeing him in a United shirt against Cardiff on Tuesday, but he might be just as excited to play as we are to see him.
Croatian journalist Antonio Bevanda has recollected a brilliant anecdote for 24Sata from when he met Mata in Croatia back in 2010 and found out he was a United fan.
“The young Spanish team won 3-0. Ivan Rakitic lost his teeth and after I went to the dressing room to speak to Bojan Krkic and Juan Mata.
“There was a Spanish journalist who was with Mata and Krkic for an exclusive interview. His idea was that the pair discussed the upcoming derby between Barcelona and Valencia which was to be played a few days later at the Nou Camp.
“Mata came out of the locker room and the reporter took a red shirt from his bag and gave it to Juan who threw it in his bag.
“It seemed to me that this jersey was Eric Cantona of Manchester United but I wanted to check with Juan. ‘I saw that you put in the bag jersey, is that a Manchester United shirt’, I asked.
“Mata laughed and replied: ‘Yes, this is United’s jersey. I’m a big fan of theirs. I hope that one day I can play at Old Trafford.'”
Mata has always been a red!
