Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-0 Cardiff City – Mata outshone by Young

by Tom Parker

David de Gea 6 – Very little to do between the sticks aside from one good intervention to deny Noone a certain goal. Made a few comfortable claims off his line too.

Rafael 6 – Had a quiet first half but grew into the game and finished off strongly. Relatively untested defensively and did well against the wily Craig Bellamy.

Chris Smalling 8 – Another assured performance at the heart of defence for Smalling who was solid in the air and recovered the ball well.

Jonny Evans 7 – Didn’t have a great deal to do alongside Smalling but coped well with the speedy Frazier Campbell and played the ball out from the back with class.

Patrice Evra 7 – Got up and down the left side well and was involved heavily in United’s first goal. Linked up really nicely with Young and made one great defensive interception.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Caused opposite number John a number of problems and put in a few good crosses. Crashed a header off the post before Van Persie did the rest and looked confident.

Phil Jones 6 – Combative in the centre and was pretty neat in possession, if a little safe. Lacks the guile to make an impact in the final third.

Ryan Giggs 6 – Always forward thinking and played a couple of lovely diagonal balls but lacks the legs to make the midfield role his own these days.

Ashley Young 8 – Star turn from Young whose sumptuous cross created United’s first. Cut inside nicely to score a beautiful effort at a crucial time from outside the box and was generally impressive throughout, linking well with Evra.

Juan Mata 7 – A solid debut from the little Spaniard. Used the ball well and dropped deep cleverly to link defence and attack. Had one or two chances to open his account, the best from an Evra cut back, but notched an assist in a pleasing first game since his £37 million move.

Robin van Persie 7 – Looked very sharp up top, demonstrating the movement in forward areas United have perhaps lacked in the Dutchman’s absence. Headed home his 34th goal in just 50 games for United, and will play a big part if he stays fit between now and May.

Wayne Rooney 6 – Marked his introduction with a beautiful 40 yard pass but there were signs the England international was a little ring rusty. Came close with a curling effort late on which went narrowly wide.

Tom Cleverley 6 – Combative after replacing Giggs but the damage had already been done when Cleverley entered the fray.

Adnan JanuzajA late change for Mata. Had one effort on goal with a low effort which squirmed inches wide of the post.
