Manchester United submit deadline day €15 million bid for Argentinian

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have submitted a €15 million bid for FC Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi according to various sources including some in Portugal.

The 25-year-old, who has made 16 appearances for Argentina, is a stalwart in Porto’s defence this season and has helped them to within three points of Benfica at the top of the Portuguese league.

He is not a name that United have been linked with at all as his defensive partner Eliaquim Mangala was always believed to be the target, but it looks like David Moyes has gone for the more established central defender in Otamendi.

Manchester City’s pursuit of Mangala complicates any situation with Otamendi as Porto could not afford to let both players leave in the January transfer window, so it is likely only one deal (if any) could go through.

With Rio Ferdinand on the way out and potentially Nemanja Vidic too, United need to bring in at least one more top class centre back to bring some strength back into the squad in that position.

Although United would still have three excellent centre backs in Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans, adding Otamendi would give us real strength in depth
