Wilfried Zaha enjoyed a dream debut for Cardiff City today as he came off the bench and created a goal to help the Welsh side turn the game around to win 2-1 against Norwich City.
The 20-year-old’s loan move was given to him so that he could enjoy some much-needed first team football and evidently, he has reaped the benefits of it straight away.
After leaving him on the bench from the start, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Zaha’s influence on the game and admitted that his introduction gave everyone on the pitch a lift.
“It was a decision I had to make there and then,” he told Sky Sports.
“Obviously I was hoping we would be in a better position but I felt we needed some spark and the crowd needed something.
“He gave everyone a lift, that’s for sure.”
It’s fantastic for Zaha that he was able to hit the ground running and there will be United fans who are wondering why he wasn’t given the opportunity to shine at Old Trafford which is understandable. However, he did make his full debut for the club in United’s 4-0 win over Norwich back in October and didn’t have any real impact, so an improved performance might be a direct result of playing with less pressure away from Old Trafford.
Zaha needs to use this loan spell to prove to David Moyes that he is big enough and mentally strong enough to play Premier League football for United. If he can’t cut it with Cardiff, he won’t ever make it at United but his debut was a great start and hopefully it is the first of many good performances from him at Cardiff.
