It is highly likely that Rio Ferdinand will leave Manchester United after this season because he is past his best and now that the club have confirmed Nemanja Vidic is to depart, David Moyes must look to bring in a world class centre back in the summer.
When you lose two players who have given so much to the club, you can’t replace that kind of quality from within. Ferdinand cost over £30 million and Vidic was a fantastic find from Ferguson for £7 million. As talented as some of our academy players are, both Vidic and Ferdinand were world class players and need an adequate replacement.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are all fantastic players but having those three and promoting somebody like Michael Keane to the first team squad wouldn’t fill me with confidence because it would be an injury crisis waiting to happen.
What we need is a world class defender who can become a leader in the side. That’s what we have missed – someone who is ready to take the game by the scruff of the neck and drag his teammates along with him. Without that presence in defence, we have been very meek this season. Somebody likes Mats Hummels would be an outstanding signing by Moyes.
Juan Mata‘s arrival was always lauded as the first of many by Moyes and there’s no doubt that central midfield is going to be Moyes’ priority this summer but with so many players likely to leave, the changes could be monumental at Old Trafford this year.
What central defender do you think Manchester United should buy this summer, if anybody?
