Wesley Sneijder has revealed that Manchester United wanted to sign him in January but insisted he was never interested in leaving Galatasaray.
The 29-year-old has been eternally linked with a move to Old Trafford for years given United’s almost comical lack of quality in central midfield yet nothing has ever materialised. However, Sneijder spoke to Turkish Football this week and said that United were keen to bring him to Old Trafford in January.
“There were clubs who wanted to sign me like Manchester United but I have no intention of leaving and my club have no intention of letting me go,” Sneijder told .
“Leaving in January didn’t even cross my mind and the club have never told me to leave.
“There is still a lot to achieve here we are competing in the league, Turkish Cup and have a chance of beating Chelsea in the Champions League.
“I feel at home here and that’s not something you feel everywhere you go.”
Juan Mata‘s arrival was fantastic but somebody like Sneijder would have brought some genuine class to our central midfield which is what we so desperately need.
At 29, he wouldn’t be the long-term replacement that this future United side could be built on but it certainly would have been an improvement. Instead, United will have to wait until the summer for genuine reinforcement to our central midfield.
