Paul Scholes backs Manchester United starlet to break into the first team

Paul Scholes has praised youngster Saidy Janko on his performances for Manchester United since arriving in the summer and pointed towards a potential future spot in the first team for him.

Janko joined United from FC Zurich for an undisclosed fee on deadline day and the 18-year-old has clearly left an impression on Scholes from his time working with the Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League.

“Saidy has been fantastic since he came in and looks a bright prospect for the future,” Scholes told Inside United.

“Hopefully he’s on his way to the first team.”

A versatile right-sided player, Janko’s natural position is at right-wing but he is equally adept at right-back and his explosive combination of power and pace is akin to that of Antonio Valencia, but he is far more comfortable with the ball at his feet in comparison to the Ecuadorian.

Speaking ahead of United’s FA Youth Cup game against Huddersfield tomorrow, Janko insisted he knew how much it meant to win the competition.

He said: “It’s always difficult to prepare in your mind for the different levels but the FA Youth Cup is very important for the club. It is a big opportunity to show myself as well and, if I can help the team, then it is good.

“Paul has explained the history of the competition and now it has sunk in. In the first game, at Burnley, I didn’t really realise how important and big a competition it is but now I think I know it a bit better.”

United’s Class of ’92 got their first trophy with the FA Youth Cup and we also won the contest in 2011 when our side boasted the likes of Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Tom Thorpe, so it is a competition that has seen a lot of United’s brightest youngsters taste some silverware.

Janko is very well-developed for someone who is only 18 and he does stand out at Under-21 level for his sheer strength and pace. Hopefully he can use Scholes’ praise and turn in more good performances as this season goes on, starting with the FA Youth Cup tomorrow night.
