Wayne Rooney has not signed a new contract yet with Manchester United, an official spokesman for the club has confirmed.
There were reports everywhere yesterday suggesting a new five year £300,000 a week deal for Rooney was close to being agreed that would see him become United’s highest paid player and The Sun’s Charlie Wyett suggested a deal had already been signed.
However, a club spokesman has given an official statement on the situation to show United’s current stance and insisted that Rooney is yet to put pen to paper.
“There is no deal, which is why we haven’t announced it,” a United spokesman said according to Sky Sports.
More or less all of the British press ran with the Rooney stories yesterday and generally when that happens, they aren’t far off the mark so it was likely a leak from Paul Stretford or someone close to the deal.
Now that Rooney has returned from United’s warm weather training camp in Dubai, it is believed that negotiations will continue to move forward and if reports are proved to be true, Rooney will have committed his long term future to the club by the end of this week.
