Manchester United scouts were once again present to watch William Carvalho in action this weekend according to A Bola but scouts from Barcelona were also in attendance.
The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes and was imperious in the middle of the park as Sporting Lisbon ran out 1-0 winners over Olhanense.
Out of all the midfielders United have watched this year, Carvalho is who we have watched the most – our presence in Portugal this weekend was our 12th visit and it is a real indication that David Moyes is very keen on Carvalho. It’s an unprecedented level of detail and research from United but Moyes is famous for it. He is known to really scout his targets before buying and this extensive tracking of Carvalho falls in line with that.
Of course, Barcelona’s presence is a bit of a worry as they have not followed Sporting’s games with any regularity this season and it suggests they may have been alerted to either Carvalho on somebody else on display.
If United were to follow through with their scouting of Carvalho in the summer, Moyes would have to move fast and make sure he secured him before the 2014 World Cup began.
Carvalho’s unbelievable breakthrough season has seen his stock rise rapidly and plenty of people believe that Carvalho will be a regular starter for Portugal in the competition. If that happened, Carvalho’s potential value could go through the roof if he plays extremely well.
There may be no confirmed interest in Carvalho from United but no manager sends scouts 12 times to watch a team without at least entertaining the thought of signing him.
