Ruud van Nistelrooy believes that both Edison Cavani and Radamel Falcao would be ‘great additions’ to Manchester United in the summer.
Both players are prolific goalscorers and Van Nistelrooy knows a thing or two about scoring goals having netted 150 in just 219 appearances in his time at United.
There may be bigger priorities in defence and midfield but those same priorities existed when Robin van Persie joined in 2012 and when asked about Cavani in an interview with Canal+ France, Van Nistelrooy insisted that United needed more than Rooney and Van Persie if they wanted to win the Premier League.
He said: “I think he [Cavani] is a very good player and can be a great addition but he also signed for Paris St Germain recently so he won’t be cheap.
“There’s also Falcao maybe as an option as a pure No. 9 to score goals.
“I think alongside Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, you need more than two top class strikers in your squad.
“With Nani and Valencia, they have wingers who can put crosses in the box and in the midfield, they have Rooney to get a striker in position.
“I think if you sign a good finisher, it can give you 20 or 30 goals a season and that helps you to be at the top of the Premier League.”
Welbeck or Hernandez fans won’t be happy at Van Nistelrooy’s dismissal of their credentials as a top class striker but few could argue the toss that Cavani or Falcao would be an unbelievable and luxurious addition to the squad.
It would be strange for David Moyes to make a marquee striker signing when the problems in other areas are too large to ignore but stranger things have happened.
