Robin van Persie may become Manchester United’s captain

by Sam Peoples

Earlier this week, Manchester United’s official website published an article looking at five potential future captains for next season as Nemanja Vidic is set to leave.

The article listed Jonny Evans, David de Gea, Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher as five choices, which meant that Robin van Persie wasn’t included.

This led to multiple news outlets including Metro, The Independent and The Mirror stating that Van Persie’s future was placed in further doubt because he was omitted from the list.

However, they all failed to read the disclaimer written at the top of the article: “The opinions expressed in this article are personal to the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of Manchester United FC.”

The article did not reflect United’s stance on Van Persie’s future nor his potential to become United’s captain next year. He could take the armband just as much as Rooney, Evans or Fletcher could.

Will he become United’s captain next season? There’s a possibility. On paper, there are other candidates who seem more deserving candidates but that doesn’t rule out Van Persie at all.

In his first year at the club, Van Persie was the leader and he spearheaded our title-winning campaign. This year, he has been marred by frustrating injuries and a lack of form which have both contributed to United’s current downfall.

However, form is only temporary and with recharged batteries from a break in Dubai, Van Persie could return firing on all cylinders and all United fans are hoping that he does.
