After he stole the show against Arsenal, Toni Kroos will be the name of every Manchester United’s fans lips ahead of the biggest summer transfer window our club has had in a long time.
The 24-year-old’s man of the match performance earned him deserved plaudits but instead of being filled with optimism that he could be a midfielder to steer United into a new era, a lot of fans dismissed any possibility of him joining Manchester United off the back of it – despite the fact there is every chance it could happen.
If it did happen, it would be for one simple reason – money. There is only one reason why Kroos has not put pen to paper on a new contract with Bayern Munich – money. There is only one reason why Kroos would consider moving to Manchester United – money. There is one thing that United will certainly have plenty of in the summer – money.
Leaked wages reportedly of Bayern Munich players showed Kroos is on €4.5 million per year while the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Muller are on €8 million. If that was Kroos’ salary, it would equivalate to just under €95,000 per week. He’d be offered far in excess of that to join United.
In this situation, it is all down to compromise from Bayern Munich. Kroos reportedly wants €150,000 per week for parity in the club with other top earners but Bayern are unwilling to match those demands in order to stick to their wage structure. Bayern know they run the risk of creating a domino effect as giving Kroos a much improved wage could see other players asking for the same. If they can find a compromise, Kroos will stay but if they don’t, then he may have to leave to find the money and parity he wants.
Sure, there were different scenarios and circumstances, but Robin van Persie and Juan Mata were extremely surprising signings from two of our biggest domestic rivals. Both were seen as impossible to pull off yet we signed the pair. Why can’t Kroos be added to that list?
If Bayern were in two minds about Kroos, his performance against Arsenal showed that he was worth every penny on a new contract but whether Bayern decide to pay remains to be seen. Although it is could well turn out to be another Thiago/Fabregas situation, the potential for Kroos to move to Old Trafford is there.
