Wilfried Zaha set a new challenge that should inspire him to improve

Wilfried Zaha has been challenged by Roy Hodgson to stake a claim on a spot in England’s team for Brazil after admitting he is yet to make his mind up about what wide players he is going to take.

There are a host of players who will challenge Zaha for a spot including Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Johnson and Lennon so the competition for places is stiff but it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility that Zaha could earn himself a seat on the plane. That should be motivation for him to be as good as he can be for the second half of this season.

“We’re not short of wide players, we’re awash,” Hodgson told Wales Online.

“Sterling’s form seems to be going up and up since he got back in the Liverpool side.

“You’ve got Zaha back in the frame again because he’s playing football at Cardiff.

“Redmond is back at Norwich doing very, very well.

“So is Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Lennon is still there. Adam Johnson is another one.

“What it means is that we do have competition in the wide areas.

“These players have got everything to play for. I will have to make a choice.

“It’s going to be my choice, how many of that type of player do I want to include in the squad and which ones. You don’t know what the months are going to bring.”

Form going into the World Cup is crucial for any player who wants to enjoy a good tournament and although Zaha is nowhere near a call-up right now, he does have the time and platform at Cardiff to make it happen.

What he now needs to do is show some mental strength by overcoming his disappointing start as a Manchester United player and show everyone he is worth the £15 million forked out for him. If he does that, maybe he’ll become the linchpin in England’s World Cup winning campaign…
