Wayne Rooney backed to become Manchester United’s new captain

Nemanja Vidic has backed Wayne Rooney to be Manchester United’s new captain and admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if David Moyes chose him to take up the armband next year.

Many fans can’t see past Moyes choosing to make Rooney the new captain given how much attention he has focused on him this year and the fact that he has just signed a new long-term contract with the club, and Vidic shares that sentiment.

“Wayne is a big player and it is important for him to stay,” Vidic told Sky Sports News.

“Wayne has signed a long-term contract and he will be one of the most important players in the next few years.

“Obviously it is the manager’s decision and he has to choose his captain.

“Wayne is one of the leaders in the team and I will not be surprised if he becomes captain.”

Rooney’s fractious relationship with the club over the years is the main reason why a lot of fans see Rooney’s potential captaincy as a farce but because of Moyes, it’s hard not to see past Rooney getting the armband.

Vidic feels he would be a candidate but do you think  Rooney should be Manchester United’s new captain?
