FC Porto boss Paulo Fonseca handed in his resignation last night following Porto’s 1-0 home loss to Estoril, the first time the Portuguese side had lost a home game since 2008.
Fonseca’s decision to quit should put Manchester United on red alert because it throws the future of targets Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando up in the air.
David Moyes has watched both in action this season and although Manchester City made a deadline day bid for the duo, neither deal was finalised meaning that United have an opportunity to hiijack either deal if we wanted to.
Nemanja Vidic has already confirmed he is going to leave Manchester United at the end of the season and Rio Ferdinand looks likely to leave as well, so United could decide to bring in a top class centre back like Mangala.
As for Fernando, he was supposed to sign a gentleman’s agreement with Porto so that he couldn’t leave for free on a Bosman in the summer but nothing has been confirmed, meaning he could still leave on a free. Famed for his endless energy and tenacious tackles, Fernando is a midfielder who would really strengthen United’s lackadaisical midfield.
On paper, both players would bring a lot to United in the summer and Moyes will certainly be thinking about their potential in a United shirt.
