Rooney reveals what Manchester United’s ‘attacking quartet’ have been doing in training

Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Adnan Januzaj started together for the first time in the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend and it was exciting to see how they played together.

As fans had hoped, the focus of play with those four in attack was for possession football and chances created through passing rather than exclusively relying on crossing, a tactic which paid dividends for United.

That style of play was something that the quartet had been working on during training this week and it translated well onto the pitch.

“We’ve been working hard in training to develop a good understanding, making sure we keep the ball around their penalty box and trying to create chances,” Rooney said.

“I thought we did that quite well. Now Tuesday is a massive game for us. We want to be going into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and it will be tough, but we will get this game out of our system and be ready.”

It was a massively different tactic from David Moyes’ side against opposition who sat deep and defended well, much like Fulham did, and for the first time Moyes gave United fans a reason to be optimistic because it sounds like could start to play a different style of football for the rest of the season, given what the players are training on.

Hopefully, the performance against Palace from Rooney, Van Persie, Mata and Januzaj was only the tip of the iceberg. If they can really start to gel before the start of the season, then United could definitely mount a charge up the Premier League as well as in the UEFA Champions League.
