Moyes: I decided last week to play Tom Cleverley against Olympiacos

by Sam Peoples

Tom Cleverley returned to Manchester United’s starting XI last night against Olympiacos and David Moyes admitted that his decision to start him was made last week.

Like the rest of the team, Cleverley was uninspiring and contributed to United’s poor performance on the night but the fact that Moyes decided last week that he was going to play Cleverley is a strange decision, especially seeing as Rio Ferdinand publicly spoke out against Moyes’ policy to select his teams late.

It means that Moyes made the choice before Marouane Fellaini‘s impressive performance against Crystal Palace and many wanted to see him start two games in a row, but it wasn’t to be.

Carrick and Cleverley were superb against Arsenal only a few weeks ago yet they were both very poor out in Greece, so the blame has to fall at their feet rather than Moyes’.

Unfortunately for Tom, his performance against Olympiacos was poor and he will just become the scapegoat for our loss again (see Bleacher Report) despite the fact there were so many players who equally, if not more so, under-performed including Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick.

Do you think Tom Cleverley should have started?
