Juan Mata dropped from Spain squad putting his World Cup in doubt

by Sam Peoples

Juan Mata has been dropped by Vicente Del Bosque for Spain’s upcoming friendly against Italy which has put his place at the 2014 Brazil World Cup in doubt.

The 25-year-old was included in the squad for Spain’s November friendlies against Guinea and South Africa but has been omitted from this friendly.

This squad is the last one that Del Bosque will name before choosing his 30 man preliminary squad in May for the World Cup.

Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez has also been dropped in midfield while Xavi, Thiago and David Silva have all been drafted back in.

Such is the quality of the Spain squad, leaving a player like Mata means somebody like Thiago can come into the side and in a season full of trials and tribulations with Manchester United, Mata’s place in the World Cup is certainly not guaranteed now.
