Manchester City have entered the race to sign Manchester United’s long term midfield target William Carvalho, according to A Bola.
Spanish radio station Cadena Ser have also credited Atletico Madrid with an interest in Carvalho and ahead of the World Cup, interest in him is building.
The 21-year-old has long been on United’s radar having been watched by Manchester United scouts on 13 occasions this season but this is the first time that City have been credited with an interest in him. We were also linked with FC Porto’s Fernando before City came in and failed with a deadline day bid for the midfielder.
This week has been great for Carvalho as he has been called up to the Portugual squad for an international friendly next week and he is tipped to be a star player for Portugal during the World Cup.
It is widely expected that Carvalho will leave Sporting Lisbon in the summer for a sizeable fee but what club he could join remains up in the air.
Carvalho earns just £4,000 a month according to the Daily Mail so wages wouldn’t be a problem for any club but it is all about where he will get the most playing time.
He’d get that at United as we are in dire need of some fresh faces in midfield whereas if he was to join City, he’d have to compete in a squad that is already stacked with midfielders and for his career progress, it would make more sense to move to United.
Saying that, there is no guarantee he will leave in the summer but if he continues to progress as fast and as well as he has done, Sporting would struggle to hold onto him.
