PICTURE: Ronaldo meets up with Manchester United’s main midfield target

William Carvalho joined up with Cristiano Ronaldo this week ahead of Portugal’s international friendly with Cameroon.

The 21-year-old has been watched by Manchester United scouts on more than a dozen occasions this season and this week, he spoke out about interest linking him with Manchester United for the first time this week and also discussed the possibility of moving to Real Madrid.

“It’s nice being praised and to know there are some big clubs interested in me,” he said. Carvalho said.

“It could be Manchester United or Real Madrid. It’s just nice to have a great European club after me, but at the moment I’m just totally focused on Sporting and doing my best until the end of the season.

“At the end of the campaign, we will see what happens.”

Given that Ronaldo has played for both clubs, Carvalho probably asked him for some advice but where would Ronaldo tell him to go to?

If it is career progression he wants, United would be the better choice. At United, Carvalho would come straight into the starting XI given our need for some fresh faces in midfield. At Real Madrid, he would have to fight for a midfield spot against the likes of Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric and Asier Illarramendi.

Financially, United should also be able to compete with Real Madrid this summer but United next season will offer no guarantees of any success given the major changes that are likely to happen, whereas Madrid are likely to there or there abouts at the top as they always are.

Carvalho is already considered one of the best young midfield prospects in Europe thanks to his outstanding breakthrough season with Sporting Lisbon and if he can impress at the World Cup too, his stature will only increase (as will his price tag).

Do you think William Carvalho will join Manchester United?
