Eric Harrison believes Manchester United should go all out to sign Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley in the summer as he feels both players will go on to be great players in the future.
Harrison was United’s coach when the Class of ’92 was coming through our academy and he was responsible in helping them become the players they are today, so he knows a thing or two about blooding youngsters at United.
Shaw’s fantastic season has continued with his first call-up to the England squad and he is expected to challenge Ashley Cole for a spot in the final World Cup squad while Barkley enjoyed an explosive start to the season.
“I think he’s already a fantastic footballer,” Harrison told the Manchester Evening News when asked about Shaw.
“He’s a modern day full back, he gets forward really well and causes havoc. He’s going to be an incredible player and he could play for England for the next 10-15 years.
“I like Patrice Evra, but he’s in his 30s now and if he wants to go to another club or retire then Shaw would be the perfect replacement.”
Southampton have reiterated that Shaw isn’t for sale but they will find it difficult to hold onto him in the summer, especially if he is involved at the World Cup.
As for Barkley, he worked under Moyes for years and credited him with helping his game develop but it would have to be a substantial bid to prise him away from Everton who showed with Marouane Fellaini in the summer that they are difficult to negotiate with.
He added: “I’ve seen him play quite a lot and he’s class, there’s no question about that. I do wish that he would come to United.
“He would help the area where we are struggling a bit at the minute – the midfield. He will play for a top club definitely and I hope that club is United and I’m in no doubt that he will also be a superb player for his country.”
United’s revamp in the summer is going to be widespread and in terms of building for the future, two of England’s most promising young players would be a fantastic way to start that.
