Lingard: I rejected Liverpool move for Manchester United

Jesse Lingard has revealed to Brighton’s official website that he rejected the opportunity to join Liverpool in order to move to Manchester United back when he was nine years old.

He has since spent 12 years as a United player and worked his way to the edge of breaking into the first team and his current loan spell at Brighton is seen as the last step before he is either introduced as a first team player or is sold by the club (hopefully it is the former rather than the latter).

“I was travelling up and down the motorway, training with both Liverpool and United, and when I got to nine I had to make a decision,” he told Brighton’s official match day programme.

“In my last sessions at Liverpool I was not really enjoying it and I got on well with the coaches at United and had a lot of friends there, so my choice was made and it’s paid off so far.”

Good choice Jesse.

Lingard has shown with the Under-21s that he is a fantastic talent but he has had to wait patiently for his opportunity with the first team.

After an impressive pre-season this year, many expected him to follow Januzaj up to the first team squad but it wasn’t to be. However, if he can make the most of this loan spell at Brighton, it is surely only a matter of time before he does make the move up.
