Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay, according to The Mirror.
The 27-year-old is a player who has been linked with a move to Manchester United for the best part of two years and now reports suggest David Moyes is willing to pay his €20 million release clause to bring him to Old Trafford.
Garay has been a central figure at the heart of Benfica’s defence ever since he arrived from Real Madrid and would certainly add to United’s squad but back in October, he said that a summer move to United had fallen through because of Moyes.
“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer,” Garay said.
“The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.
“I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that’s not a problem.
“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it’s never possible to discard anything in the future.”
If that was indeed the case, then why would Moyes have had any interest in re-signing him?
Also, Spanish newspaper Marca boldly claimed that United had secured Garay’s signing last summer and that didn’t work out, so this could be the latest chapter in a long saga involving Garay and United.
