Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-1 Bayern Munich – Fellaini farce

by Tom Parker

David de Gea 8: Produced a fine save to deny Arjen Robben 30 minutes in and could do nothing about Schweinsteiger’s powerful equaliser. Kicking and catching were perfect.

Phil Jones 7: Very solid up against Ribery with the Ballon D’Or nominee having little in the way of joy up against Jones. Made a couple of pivotal defensive actions as United sat deep in his own half.

Rio Ferdinand 8: Stood up to the challenge tonight in potentially his last European appearance. Some eye-catching defensive actions. Pivotal block against a Robben shot in the second period.

Nemanja Vidic 9: A deep defensive line played into his hands and Vidic was excellent at doing the gritty stuff tonight. Colossal in the air, impressive on the deck and his looping header demonstrated technique of the highest order. Immense.

Alex Buttner 8: Many predicted him to have a tough night but the Dutchman did well against Robben. Wasn’t afraid to get tight to his compatriot and was gutsy throughout, making a good case to start more often.

Antonio Valencia 6: Protected Phil Jones really well down United’s right, limiting the usually rampageous Alaba’s impact further forward but struggled in United’s final third and his final ball often letting him down. Fortunate not to see red for a late lunge.

Michael Carrick 8: Not his typical composed self in possession but he did use the ball well when he had time to think. Defensive contribution was massive alongside an out-of-sorts Fellaini. Near to his sparkling best.

Marouane Fellaini 4: Again exposed against top level opposition. The Belgian was a downright liability in possession and he was caught ball-watching for Bayern’s equaliser, Fight and bottle went missing on the night.

Ryan Giggs 6: The veteran always plays with his head up in the centre and while he struggled to impact on play, he looked the most likely to feed Rooney or Welbeck. Withdrawn through injury but buzzed around well in the centre.

Danny Welbeck 7: Harshly had a genuine goal chalked off early doors but should have put United ahead when one-on-one with Neuer towards the end of the first half. Martinez may be relieved to be suspended for the second leg.

Wayne Rooney 6: Isolated up top and struggled to have the influence on the game he usually has. One snap shot forced a Neuer save but that aside, his influence in the final third was limited. Worked his socks off for the cause, mind.

David Moyes 7: Relatively smart team selection. Players seemed to turn up for him tonight, although he may be disappointed United didn’t add to their tally. Might have hooked the woeful Fellaini.

Shinji Kagawa 7: Brought on to change the game and his intelligence and guile did cause Bayern some problems. United definitely improved after the Japanese playmaker was introduced.

Ashley Young n/a: Replaced an injured Buttner late on, saw little of the ball.

Javier Hernandez n/a: A late change for a fading Welbeck. No real goalscoring chances.
