Player Ratings: Newcastle 0-4 Manchester United – Magnificent Mata and Kagawa

by Tom Parker

Anders Lindegaard 8 – An impressive display on only a third outing of the season for the Dane. Pulled off three great saves, the third of which to deny Cisse from point-blank range was particularly good.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Filled in at full-back, a role he never looks truly comfortable in. Solid enough defensively but his impact further forward was limited.

Chris Smalling 7 – Assured display on his return from injury. Didn’t have too much to do but he stood up to the test when called upon and mopped up well.

Phil Jones 7 – Excellent in the air and got the better of Papiss Cisse on a number of occasions. Solid.

Patrice Evra 5 – Picked up an early knock and struggled to create much going forward. Defensively, the skipper caught out on a couple of occasions by the tenacious Santon.

Ashley Young 5 – Provided a decent outlet down United’s right and put in a few menacing crosses before he came off because of a hand injury.

Marouane Fellaini 5 – Relatively composed against poor opposition and used the ball reasonably well, if again being a little safe in his passing. Might have been sent off for another elbow in the first half. Still, shockingly poor in possession and lacking in energy.

Darren Fletcher 7 – Understated but efficient in the centre once more, Fletcher kept United ticking over nicely and made a couple of nice interceptions in the middle of the park.

Shinji Kagawa 8 – Had a fantastic impact on the game and linked well with fellow attacking midfielder Mata. Slid Chicharito in just before half time and had a big hand in United’s second and third goals.

Juan Mata 9 – Delightful free-kick brought the contest to life and his second goal showed his ice-cool composure in front of goal. Delicious flick for United’s fourth capped off a brilliant performance for Mata who linked attack and midfield expertly.

Javier Hernandez 8 – More involved than he has been of late. Hit the post late in the first half but made up with it with an instinctive finish after the break. Flashed a snapshot over the bar and looked a threat throughout.

David Moyes 7 – Got the team selection just right and will have a fresh group of players available for the Bayern game. Fluidity was good, especially after Fellaini went off in Moyes’ biggest Premier League win as United boss to date.

Adnan Januzaj 7 – Blew hot and cold but made one or two telling contributions and his influence on the game grew and he took his goal well.

Alexander Buttner 6 – Replaced Evra and looked relatively solid. Endeavoured to get forward and could start in Munich on Wednesday.

Nani 5 – A little rusty after a lengthy lay-off which was expected. Weight of pass was a little short. Will improve with games.
