Borussia Dortmund have confirmed Ilkay Gundogan has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2016.
The announcement ends a long negotiation process that has been delayed due to Gundogan’s back injuries that have kept him sidelined all season.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for him all year but given his fitness issues, it was always very unlikely that we would have tried to bring him to Old Trafford because there is every chance he could turn out to be another Owen Hargreaves with persistent injury problems.
Gundogan signing the contract strikes one player off the seemingly endless list of midfielders that Manchester United have been linked with this year.

For the 23-year-old, he has landed on his feet. Despite missing a whole season and the World Cup through injury, he has landed a new contract.
Although, that being said, it is only a one year extension which suggests that Borussia Dortmund are being tentative because of his injuries.
