William Carvalho has been named Portugal’s breakthrough Athlete of the Year by the CGD Foundation, Sporting Lisbon have officially confirmed.
Given to 15 winners in separate categories, the award is handed out to the best newcomers in all fields and Carvalho winning the award for sport is a testament to the season he has had with Sporting.
The 22-year-old was only given a chance with the first team after finances meant that youngsters had to be given opportunities and he took his with both hands.
Carvalho has also been named Player of the Month a record four times this season as well as twice for the Young Player of the Month, so his status as a top class footballer is rising rapidly.
Reports this week suggested, for the second time this season, that Manchester United had a deal in place to bring Carvalho to Old Trafford before the World Cup starts.
By the looks of it, United would be smart to do so because there is every chance Carvalho could explode onto the World Cup and see his stature rise even faster.
