David Moyes’ pandering towards Wayne Rooney has irked a lot of Manchester United fans this season and when praising the recent performances of Juan Mata, Moyes namedropped his understanding with Rooney as one of the best parts of it.
Naming Rooney as a player who Mata has struck a partnership with is doing a bit of a disservice to Shinji Kagawa as, in recent weeks, the Japanese playmaker has blossomed alongside Mata.
However, Moyes still chose to single out Rooney and praise his partnership with the Spaniard.
“One thing I will say is it’s been missed how well Mata has done,” Moyes ManUtd.com.
“I think it’s gone a little bit amiss but Mata has been terrific in his play. He’s started to assist goals and score goals and has struck up an understanding with Wayne [Rooney] and with who [else] he’s played with.
“Juan has been a little bit overlooked. I could nearly say you don’t want to talk about anything so positive, but he’s been really good.”
Mata has struck up a good understanding with Rooney? His best performance this season came at Newcastle when Rooney wasn’t even in the squad. Mata is at his best when allowed to roam in the number ten role, a spot that Rooney regularly occupies instead of him.
Kagawa has really come into his own in recent Premier League performances and he also changed the game in the first leg against Bayern Munich so for Mata to keep playing such good football, Moyes has to make sure that Mata stays in the number ten role and Kagawa is played alongside him.
