Giggs hints at new Manchester United deals for Evra and Ferdinand

by Sam Peoples

Ryan Giggs believes that Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have still got something to offer Manchester United and wants to see both players remain at Old Trafford next season.

Many saw this season as the last for Ferdinand and Evra but Giggs doesn’t think it is the right time for them to leave.

“I do think they’ve got a role to play next season. I’d like them to stay on,” Giggs said.

“It’s their decision, their contracts are both up. They have both given massive service to the club and they are both fit and looked good last week against Norwich. I don’t see why not.

“It’s everyone’s decision – it’s Rio’s, it’s Pat’s and it’s Ed Woodward’s and whoever is the manager next year. I think it is a group discussion but I still think they have got a lot to offer.

“They’ve been great players and remain assets to a club like Manchester United.”

You can certainly understand Giggs’ assessment of Evra who has still played 31 Premier League games this season and could become a mentor for our new left-back next year if somebody like Luke Shaw came in.

However, it’s a different scenario with Ferdinand who has only played ten Premier League games. Nemanja Vidic is leaving so keeping the experience is probably the only reason why Ferdinand should still be kept around because he shouldn’t be getting game time ahead of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling or Jonny Evans.

Of course, the decision will ultimately fall at the feet of our new manager but if Giggs does get the assistant role Manchester United want him to have, he’ll stand in support of both players staying at the club.

Do you think Evra and Ferdinand should be at Manchester United next season?
