Adnan Januzaj‘s agent has revealed that the 19-year-old is on a larger contract than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were at his age.
There was a possibility that Januzaj may have left Manchester United earlier this year as his current deal was set to expire but we secured him on a five year deal.
His agent Dirk de Vriese also told Voetbalmagazine that an ‘insane’ deal from Paris St Germain’s Qatari investors was rejected in order to remain at Old Trafford.
“I can only say that he is the highest paid young player in the world,” De Vriese said.
“At 18, he has a larger contract than Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi at that age. That really says a lot and I’m very proud of that.
“All the big clubs have pulled at his sleeve. Especially Paris Saint-Germain, who wanted to go very far for him.
“Five minutes before we signed the contract extension [with United], an adviser to the president of Qatar offered us an insane deal.
“Because Adnan could have left as a free agent, the Qatari investors were able to do the impossible. As well as with his salary, as with the signing on fee.”
It’s fantastic that Januzaj rejected a big money move to PSG in order to remain at Old Trafford as it really shows how football is more important than money for him.
However, why has De Vriese made this public knowledge? It seems unnecessary to put extra pressure on Januzaj to perform and now that it is common knowledge how much he earns, there will be higher expectancies placed on him.
That being said, Januzaj has gone from strength to strength this year and if it continues in the same vein, he’ll go to the World Cup with Belgium and light up the world’s biggest stage.
