The 18-year-old’s debut completes a remarkable set of achievements this season having scored with Manchester United’s Under-18s/19s/21s and senior side all in the same campaign, something which hasn’t gone amiss, hence why Wilson is getting these opportunities.
In a squad with plenty of competition for places up front, Wilson has immediately shown his worth.
“James played really well,” Van Persie said.
“I know how hard it is to make your debut – I made mine when I was about 29! I know how special it can be. He made it very special for himself and for everyone tonight. To score two goals is really special.”
Van Persie was equally as vocal in his praise for Januzaj and there are plenty of reasons to suggest why Wilson can enjoy a similar growth pattern to the Belgian, least not for the fact that he is currently scoring goals for him at every level.
At 18, the world is Wilson’s oyster and now that he has made that breakthrough into the first team, hopefully it won’t be long before Wilson is scoring for fun with the senior side on a regular basis.
