James Wilson may have stolen the limelight on Tuesday night thanks to his brace but Tom Lawrence deserves just as many plaudits for his performance for a brilliant debut.
The 20-year-old had only returned from a very successful loan spell at Yeovil Town that week but was thrown straight into the gauntlet by Ryan Giggs and where many a youngster may have wavered, Lawrence flourished.
He was immediately confident with the ball at his feet and there were shades of a 17-year-old Giggs making his debut against Everton.
It was fitting that Lawrence was replaced by Giggs and on Twitter after the game, Lawrence was understandably over the moon:
“Wow what a feeling that was tonight, loved every minute,” he said.
Giggs admitted he was happy and proud at their performances and so was every single United fan.
Not many clubs can say that two 18-year-old academy graduates scored braces in the Premier League in the same season but that’s what makes United united. We’re different. Youth will always be our foundation and that will never change.
Lawrence has had a brilliant season and with the Under-21s final coming up against Chelsea on 14 May at Old Trafford, he’ll be sure to lead the attack again with Wilson.
If he can build on his brilliant debut and use it as a platform for bigger and better things, the future is bright for Lawrence.
