David de Gea was all smiles in the Manchester Suite last night after being named the Sir Matt Busby and Players’ Player of the Year.
The Spaniard was the deserved winner of both awards and collected the trophies from fellow Spaniard Juan Mata on stage, before starting to talk in English.
It’s the first time I remember De Gea speaking in English and after the ceremony, he sat down with Mandy Henry and gave a full interview in English. Fair play Dave.
The importance of De Gea knowing how to speak English shouldn’t be underestimated. After all, half of his job is to bark instructions at his defenders to keep them organised.

In his chat with Mandy Henry, De Gea also admitted (not for the first time) that he’s hoping for a ‘dream’ spot in Spain’s squad for the World Cup.
“It’s difficult. I had a really good season and it would be a dream for me to go,” he said.
After the season he has had, De Gea deserves to be on the plane with Spain.
