Four Manchester United players make England squad and two on standby

Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been named by Roy Hodgson in England’s World Cup squad while Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley have been placed on standby.

There are no eyebrows raised about the inclusion of those four players in the 23 man squad nor for Carrick and Cleverley’s place on the standby list.

There’s understandably no place on the standby list for Wilfried Zaha after the frustrating season he has had and Ashley Young has not been given the nod either.

Carrick is disappointed to not be involved in the squad but after his disappointing season, Hodgson has probably made the right call to place him there.

As for Cleverley, he can count himself lucky that he is even included at all.
