With the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic this summer, new manager Louis Van Gaal will no doubt be looking to bring in an experienced centre-back to help shore up the defence.
Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels has been strongly linked but he’d be very expensive as Dortmund would probably not want to sell, so we should turn our attention to long term target Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay.
The Argentinian defender has been linked to United countless times in the last couple of years and there were even claims that Sir Alex Ferguson even had a deal in place for him to join last summer but it was promptly scrapped by incoming manager David Moyes.
At 27, Garay is hitting the peak of his career and that has been evident by his performances this season. He has been top class and integral in helping Benfica win the Primeria Liga and reach the final of the Europa league.
He is a tall, dominant defender, very assured with the ball at his feet and is superb in the air, even in the opposition penalty box and has a very impressive eight goals to his name this season.
Garay isn’t very quick but his clever positioning and good awareness help make up for this. Nemanja Vidic showed us that pace isn’t everything for a defender.
He was close to joining Zenit in January but the move broke down as he decided to stay at Benfica for the rest of the season. However, it’s almost inevitable that he will move on this summer and could be available for as little as £15m, so United should certainly consider making a move for him.
