Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller emerged as a target for Manchester United as soon as Louis van Gaal was tipped for the job and has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since.
The 24-year-old was brought through into Bayern’s first team by the Dutchman and clearly it has left Muller with good memories as he has admitted having a special relationship with Van Gaal.
“It’s no secret that Louis van Gaal and I have a special relationship but, as everyone knows, I also have a special relationship with FC Bayern Munich. I am under contract at Bayern until 2017,” Muller said.
As quick as Muller was to point out the special bond he has with Van Gaal, he pointed out how happy he was currently playing for Bayern.
He added: “We have just won the domestic double and now I am looking forward to the World Cup. I have the feeling that I will play an important role at FC Bayern — and I 100 percent identify with the club and the people around the club. That’s a fact.
“I enjoy playing for Bayern — actually, there is nothing nicer.”
From United’s perspective, Muller admitting this in public gives Van Gaal some impetus if he did want to put a bid in for him and his versatility could make him a smart signing.
Muller can play across all midfield and attacking positions and Van Gaal is known to like that in a player. In his biography, Van Gaal said he likes players who can use both feet and are equally as strong in defence as they are in attack, so Muller fits the bill in that respect.
Bayern are unlikely to want to sell one of their most prolific players, but it might not stop Van Gaal from trying now that Muller has publicly flirted with him.
