Contrasting reports over future of long-term Manchester United target cause confusion

by Sam Peoples

Ezequiel Garay has flirted with a move to Manchester United more times than he has eaten hot dinners in the past 18 months and according to Garay, only David Moyes’ appointment stopped him from moving to Old Trafford last year.

United are more than likely going to be in the market for a centre back this summer following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, so Garay seemed a plausible option after a fantastic season and the fact he is the last year of his contract.

However, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Garay is set to complete a €20 million move to Andre Villas-Boas’ Zenit St Petersburg.

The reports say that Garay was going to move in January but Benfica’s president Luis Filipe Vieria blocked the move and told Zenit he could join in the summer.

By contrast, Spain’s Super Deporte believes Garay and Rodrigo are going to be new owner Peter Lim’s first signings at Valencia.

As it stands, Garay seems to be in the centre of a tug of war and it doesn’t look like United are interested in returning for him but there are those who feel that he could be a great signing given how impressive he has been for Benfica this year.
