Patrice Evra has been given a contract extension and will remain a Manchester United player for at least another season, according to a full list of released players from the Premier League.
The 33-year-old had the option to trigger a one year contract extension at the club but it wasn’t yet known whether Louis van Gaal wanted to keep him at the club or whether he would depart.
Now it is clear that there is a future for the Frenchman at the club for at least another season and it was the right thing for Van Gaal to do.
Losing Evra’s experience in the same season as Ferdinand, Vidic and Giggs would have been too much to take. We need someone with Evra’s presence in the dressing room.
Also, there would be no better player for Luke Shaw to have as a mentor than Evra and so long as his playing time is curtailed next season, we’ll be able to get the very best out of Evra.
Update: Manchester United has now confirmed Evra’s one year contract extension.
