Does this news from Manchester United mean Luke Shaw isn’t joining?

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have now officially confirmed that Patrice Evra has signed a new one year contract extension at the club.

The 33-year-old was out of contract this summer and many thought he would follow Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out the exit door but his new deal means he will stay at United until he is at least 34.

It’s great news that we won’t lose the experience of Evra in the same summer as Ferdinand, Vidic and Giggs but does his new deal mean Luke Shaw isn’t moving to Old Trafford?

In a word, no. Shaw’s arrival shouldn’t be affected by Evra’s new deal so long as the Frenchman is happy to take up a mentoring role. He can’t be our regular left-back if we bring in Shaw, he needs to accept a squad role and you imagine United would have made that abundantly clear to him before a new deal was agreed.

Who better for Shaw to learn from than Evra who has been there, done that and got the t-shirt from everything in the past eight years? He’ll be a great mentor for Shaw and an important dressing room presence for the squad.

As for Shaw, he told the press today that he doesn’t wish to comment on his future and Roy Hodgson has made it clear he doesn’t want any of his players distracted by transfer dealings, so it remains to be seen what happens next.

One player who Evra’s new deal does spell bad news for is Alexander Buttner who will more than likely leave if Shaw comes in as United would not need three left-backs but could he remain at the club as a left-winger? He’d certainly be no worse than Ashley Young.
