Manchester United’s move for Luke Shaw has been dragged out for longer than anybody wanted it to be but now that Rickie Lambert has been confirmed as a Liverpool player, the wheels of a Southampton exodus in motion.
Southampton insisted they would be holding on to their players this summer but they’ve let their most influential player leave for a reported £4m which offers them little chance of replacing the 32-year-old with someone as influential for that price.
Mauricio Pochettino’s exit was seen by many as the turning point and now that Lambert has left, it shows that Southampton are willing to let their best players go for the right price.
A deal for Shaw been close for a few weeks now but as of right now, nothing has been confirmed. Whether it is personal terms, fees or contract negotiations that is stalling the deal, United need to sort it out pronto because it isn’t a case of Southampton refusing to sell.
As we said earlier this week, United need to give an extra £3m to Southampton if it is a fee which is the stickling point because if we were to lose out on Shaw over a nominal amount like that, as we did with Ander Herrera last year, it would be ridiculous.
Ed Woodward and co. need to give Southampton and the player what they want wants so we can wrap up this Shaw deal before somebody else tries to crash the party.
