The target Manchester United feel they are closest to signing is Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, according to Andy Mitten.
Despite the fact the club has submitted multiple offers for Luke Shaw and have vested interest in the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Kevin Strootman and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Hummels is most likely to be the first player to join Louis van Gaal‘s side according to these reports.
If that is the case, then there has been some serious progress with Hummels in the past two weeks as towards the end of may, his father Herman said there had been no contact with United and that he was happy at Dortmund.
“He’s not contacted me about Mats moving to Manchester (United) though.
“I have heard some rumours but Mats is happy at Dortmund at the moment, and only thinking about the World Cup.”
Hummels being the player who United are closest to signing would indicate that any deal for Shaw is not as advanced as has been reported. Also, it suggests United’s pursuit of a midfielder is still very much an ongoing process.
This transfer window has so far been a tombola of names, agents and nothing but hot air. With only eight days until the World Cup starts, we are yet to confirm any signings but if Hummels was to arrive, it would be a big step in the right direction of rebuilding this United squad.
