Sporting Lisbon have signed Oriol Rosell from MLS side Sporting Kansas City on a five year deal.
The 21-year-old ex-Barcelona youth defensive midfielder has immediately been given a €45m release clause, just like William Carvalho was back in 2013.
Despite both Carvalho and Sporting insisting he would remain at the club for next year, Rosell’s signing could be the prelude to Carvalho’s exit from Sporting this summer.
Rosell’s signing is precisely what Sporting did with Carvalho last year and although they turned a profit this season for the first time in years, they could not turn afford to turn down a big money offer for Carvalho if one came in.

Of course, at this stage there is no certainty that Louis van Gaal is at all interested in signing Carvalho but with Sporting signing a new defensive midfielder, it raises questions about Carvalho’s future at the club.
