Lisandro Lopez has revealed that the only reason he joined Benfica last summer was because Ezequiel Garay was going to join Manchester United.
Garay was heavily linked with a move to United all year and multiple reports at different points insisted a deal was in place for him to move to Old Trafford but it never materialised.
This season, Garay impressed once again for Benfica, helping them to the Portuguese League title as well as a runners-up medal in the Europa League final but it could have been very different.
“Benfica bought me because Garay was going to Manchester United,” Lopez told Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
Lopez ended up spending the season on loan to Getafe as Garay’s deal collapsed which he didn’t expect and from United’s perspective, not signing Garay was questionable given how shaky our defence was last year.
Whether or not Garay makes the move to United this summer remains to be seen.
