Last night, reports surfaced from Cadena Ser in Spain that Manchester United were going to sign Ander Herrera for €36m from Athletic Bilbao.
Those reports were swiftly picked up by multiple news outlets in Spain and today, the British press have followed up with their own reports.
The BBC, Telegraph, Independent, Sky Sports and Daily Mail have all reported in unison that Herrera will join United and the Daily Mail has gone a step further to suggest Herrera is already undergoing a medical.
Given that he is not away on international duty, it is very plausible he is already undergoing a medical and with his release clause set to increase on 1 July, United are obviously keen to avoid a repeat of the Marouane Fellaini scenario where we paid above his release clause soon after it expired.
Herrera’s announcement is expected by the end of the week and it would certainly be a fantastic first signing by Louis van Gaal, albeit a year late.
Last summer, David Moyes’ failed attempts to sign Herrera were embarrassing and given how this story emerged out of nowhere at what looks like an advanced stage, it is amazing how simple negotiations can be with clubs when you offer them a players’ release clause.
