Manchester United will not be signing Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay as the Portuguese club have confirmed he has joined Zenit St Petersburg for €15m.
Although he was in the last year of his contract, €15m for a defender of Garay’s quality is great value for Zenit and he’ll no doubt be a very good player for them.
Garay joining Zenit puts an end to one of the longest sagas in the history of football transfers. On more than one occasion, the Portuguese press said he was joining Manchester United yet the move never happened.
He was on the verge of joining last summer but for whatever reason, it didn’t materialise and now he’ll ply his trade in the Russian League, something which is unlikely to really test him as a player.
With only five defenders in the squad including three injury-prone centre backs, it is critical that Louis van Gaal brings in at least one new signing.
Many United fans felt Garay would have been an excellent addition to the squad this summer but Van Gaal has clearly got his eyes on other targets.
