Athletic Bilbao have announced that Ander Herrera is now free to join Manchester United after successfully paying his release clause.
Herrera had to pay the release clause himself for tax purposes and now that he is a free agent, his move to Manchester United can be officially completed.
A statement from Athletic Bilbao said: “The Football League has certified Athletic Club that player Ander Herrera Agüera has fulfilled the requirements of the applicable regulations valid for unilateral termination of the employment contract that bound him to our Club, by depositing today the amount of compensation established in the contract.
“The Athletic Club thanks Ander Herrera for his dedication during the three seasons he has enjoyed the club and wishes him the best in his future sports projects.”
Athletic Club may have thanked Herrera for his years with the club but president Josu Urrutia has fired a parting shot. He said: “Athletic want players whose first option is to defend this club’s shirt.”
“In saying this, Ander Herrera‘s choice is not a part of this idea. We find this disappointing towards the club.”
With everything now in place, all that is left is an announcement from Manchester United unveiling Herrera as our new player.
